PRACE SSC Workshop, April 20, Jülich, Germany
![]()
About PRACE
PRACE, the Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe will create a persistent pan-European high performance computing (HPC) service and infrastructure. European scientists and technologists will be able to access leadership supercomputers with capabilities equal to or better than those available in the USA and Japan. The service will comprise three to six world class leadership Tier-0 HPC centres strengthened by regional and national supercomputing centres working in tight collaboration through grid technologies. The infrastructure created by PRACE will form the top level of the European HPC ecosystem. Mid 2010 PRACE Research Infrastructure (RI) will start to grant access to the first Tier-0 system through an European peer review process.
About Scientific Steering Committee Workshop
The primary objective of the Scientific Steering Committee Workshop is to obtain a list of researchers who the scientific community would like to see in charge of proposing the initial members of the Scientific Steering Committee (SSC). Professor Richard Kenway of the University of Edinburgh, chairs the workshop. More than 40 leading computational scientists from across Europe are invited, and spanning all the major HPC application areas, to assist the PRACE Management Board by nominating up to 21 members of the SSC.
The workshop will also provide an opportunity for participants to discuss their expectations concerning the governance of the PRACE peer review process and other topics related to the scientific steering of the PRACE Research Infrastructure. In return, PRACE will provide a short update about its status and plans.
It should be noted that the creation of the SSC is formally a task of the RI. Its Council will have to approve the establishment of the SSC.
The SSC will advise PRACE on how best to exploit the PRACE facilities to maximise the benefits to European science.
About Scientific Steering Committee
The Scientific Steering Committee is of key importance within the PRACE governance structure and has been included in the PRACE statutes, although it is not a mandatory body for the association. The number of members has been constrained to an odd number up to a maximum of twenty-one, of which one shall be appointed Chair.
The duration of the term of the members is two years, renewable twice consecutively for the same period of time. The members of the Scientific Steering Committee are appointed by the Council. For any subsequent terms of appointment, the appointment by the Council is based on a list of candidates prepared by the Scientific Steering Committee.
The Chairman of the Access Committee must be a member of the Scientific Steering Committee. The Scientific Steering Committee is responsible for giving opinions on all matters of a scientific and technical nature which may influence the scientific work carried out by PRACE. The PRACE members may participate in the meetings of the Scientific Steering Committee as observers and the members of the Board of Directors may participate in the meetings of the Scientific Steering Committee as advisers, with no voting rights.
