The Association “National Centre for Supercomputing Applications” (NCSA) is founded on April 23, 2009 as a non-profit, non-governmental, non-political and nonreligious organization. The main goals of NCSA is to conduct activities in public benefit, which includes the stimulation and development of science, knowledge, skills, research and intellectual capital of Bulgarian graduates, masters and doctoral students, research teams, companies, organizations and academic community in exploiting the possibilities of high-performance computing resources.

As founders of the Association were attracted 12 prominent representatives of academia and the government with strong knowledge and experience in following areas: parallel architectures, algorithms and supercomputing applications; computer systems; physics; medicine; biology; applied mathematics; environment as well as the strategic policy development in ICT sector.

In June 2009 was singed a contract between NSCA and the State Agency for Information Technology and Communications (at present, Ministry of Transport, IT and Communication) to leverage their efforts and resources in the area of high performance computing (HPC).

NCSA will contribute to the achievement of the goals and tasks defined in WP 2, WP 3, WP4, WP5 and WP 7 of the 1IP project. Some of the main efforts will be towards: organization of training, workshops (for the South Eastern Europe) as part of WP3; and adaptation of system software and tools, as well as algorithms and standards from operating systems and software accelerators to parallelising compilers for multipeta- flop performance; and simulation and related pre- and post-treatment (e.g. visualisation) for state-of-the-art supercomputing environments, including validation and verification of application programmes as part of WP7.
