The Barcelona Supercomputing Center-Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS), established in 2005, serves as the National Supercomputing Facility in Spain. The Center hosts MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe. The mission of the BSC-CNS is to research, develop and manage information technologies with the larger goal of facilitating scientific innovation. It strives to attain these goals by focusing on technology and innovation in the areas of Computational Sciences, Life Sciences and Earth Sciences.

The Computer Science Department of the BSC-CNS focuses on adapting both currently available and cutting edge hardware and software technologies to supercomputing infrastructures. The Earth Sciences Department carries out research in earth systems modeling, focusing on atmospheric physics and chemistry. The Life Sciences Department integrates a broad range of interconnected research areas in computational biology, from genomics to computational biochemistry.

BSC is an active and well recognized participant of different initiatives for the integration and consolidation of High Performance Computing in Europe. BSC coordinates the Spanish network of Supercomputing (Red Española de Supercomputación). At the international level, BSC is a founding member of PROSPECT and is a strong participant in the DEISA and PRACE projects.

During the Preparatory Phase of PRACE, BSC has led WP2 which is responsible for the organizational aspects of the Research Infrastructure. BSC plans to leverage the extensive knowledge and expertise on research infrastructures acquired from PRACE and apply it to 1IP-PRACE by serving as WP2 leader.
